Tomorrow marks the anniversary of the death of perhaps one of the most prolific and influential writers of supernatural fiction, H. P. Lovecraft. In researching my post for tomorrow, I discovered that Providence, Rhode Island is hosting a convention in August “exploring the works of Howard Phillips Lovecraft and fellow writers of Weird Tales, past and present.”
From the site:
NecronomiCon Providence is a many-faceted convention exploring the works of Howard Phillips Lovecraft and fellow writers of Weird Tales, past and present.
Our theme is The Rational and the Supernatural – an exploration of the intersection of science and art that lays at the foundation of the “Cthulhu Mythos” genre.
We seek to pay proper homage to The Old Gentleman of Providence and his literary offspring, including numerous activities to highlight the town HPL loved and called home – PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island.
August 23rd-25th, 2013 – with events happening all the week prior
Subjects to be explored over a three-day event:
- Literature – Horror, Sci-Fi, Mythology, Weird Tales of all sorts…
- Science and Exploration – Astronomy, Archaeology, Biology…
- History – Primordial, Pre-Colombian, Colonial, 1920s…
- Culture – Art, Cinema, Theater, Music, Poetry, Food, Bars, Tattoos…
Given the remarkable feedback we’ve received, we estimate this will easily be the largest gathering of Lovecraft devotees ever.
As plans move forward to create the definitive celebration of Lovecraft, we are seeking sponsors and local organizations to collaborate with in order to implement this long-overdue Rite for Providence’s own begotten. After more than a decade since it last drew breath, the essential salts have been gathered once more. We seek to resurrect the memories of the Great Old Ones before us, and begin the next chapter of the NecronomiCon. August, 2013…
